First J Post all the way from NY

Hello to all you Warehouse blog readers in Greenville or wherever you might be.  This is David Ryan one of the new Journeyman writing all the way up in Buffalo, NY.  I thought I’d take a break from memorizing Romeo and Juliet and write a blog.  We just had the first rain all summer the past two days so i’ve spent much of them inside memorizing lines.

If you’d like know a little bit about me, I just graduated with a BFA from Niagara University which is located near Niagara Falls.  I’m excited to play Romeo for the Journeyman’s Wooden O Program because i have previous experience with the part.

Two years ago I did a little known play called An Evening of Culture where a very un-professional community theater puts on R & J.  I was lucky enough to play the very "special" character of Bubba Bedford who played Romeo in the horrible play within the play.  Then last summer i was able to play Tony in West Side Story which was a lot of fun.  Needless to say i think it only makes sense that i finally play Romeo.

Currently I’m in rehearsals for a children’s repertory theater that will tour Western New York for the rest of summer.  I was chosen to direct it this year after three years of acting in the company.  Anyways, I can’t believe how little time I have left up here in New York before my time with the Warehouse starts, but I can’t wait!

Thanks to Jen Goff for setting up the Warehouse blog and also for being gentle with me as she showed me how to blog. Thanks Jen. For those of you who do not know me, I am the new Executive and Artistic Director of The Warehouse Theatre.

I’m taking a break right now from taking pictures of our costume inventory…about half of which was ruined by a break in the City sewer system…if you read any of the articles over the last few days about a sewage break that poured 500 gallons of raw sewage into the Reedy River…well, that stuff took a nice pit stop in our basement. Nice! Our basement is also where we kept all of our costumes. Right now, our costumes are in two places…nice and clean in the green room and not so nice and clean in the more-clean-then-Friday basement, waiting to be discarded.

So sorry that my first post is such a crappy one…you knew the pun was gonna happen…but this is when we finally got it together to get me on the blog.

Thanks for all those who post and all those who read and all those who comment. I urge you all to continue so we can keep this blog a vibrant conversation. Also, thank you for filling out the online survey and if you haven’t done so, scroll down one or two postings. Talk to you soon.

I read J people

The headline was a stretch, I know.  Forgive me.

Anyway, the new Journeymen (or Js, as we affectionately call them) are beginning to arrive, and so they’re going to start lending their voices to the Warehouse blog. And they’ll be here all year, ready to share their background, experiences, inside scoops, expectations… all that good stuff.  So stay tuned and give them a big welcome!
