Review: ‘Almost, Maine’ delightful from beginning to end

By Ann Hicks • ARTS WRITER • November 20, 2008

"Love is a many-splintered thing in John Cariani’s play, "Almost, Maine," a highly entertaining piece that hit the funny bone of the Warehouse Theatre audience Monday night.

There are nearly as many reasons to like this play as there are vignettes, 11 in all, that make up the often absurd but consistently hilarious tale of wresting with Cupid on a frozen tundra.

Let’s start with the first four reasons: the four actors, Debra Capps, Adam Critchlow, Jason Shipman and Anne Tromsness. The women are well known to Greenville audiences for consistently excellent performances. The men, both journeymen-actor newcomers, partner solidly, and chew the curtain to shreds with impressive acting chops.

Whatever your plans are for the weekend, "Almost, Maine" ought to be a part of them."

Sorry I have been gone so long…coughing up lungs…that’s what Betty did to me I guess…ah sleep..sweet sweet sleep, how good you are…even though I am getting just a touch of thee. Now I spend my nights working with everyone on the 08/09 BROCHURE!!!! keep an eye out…we will be announcing any day now what our next season will be…YEAH we’ll have a party…maybe not to announce the season, but we’ll have a party for some reason…fear not. Just come to a show and hang out afterwards…you’ve heard of Jifteen right…we’ll 4/5ths of them are still around and famous as ever.

Here’s what one audience memebr thought:

"A delightfully dysfunctional look at how identity plays a role in our relationships with ourselves, and each other…I contemplated my own life after seeing Cloud 9, and realized the times when I was most unhappy was when I sought approval from others…only when I gave myself permission to be who I really am, did I feel a connection with my own spirit…and felt happy, and at peace. But…a disclaimer…this show is not for the faint of heart. Sometimes things have to get ugly, before they can be beautiful again…"
