ANNE FRANK - Audience review

Mae and I went last night and highly recommend this production to all. It is sold out this Friday night and its run ends next weekend.

It is all too easy to forget WWII and the impact on the Jewish families trapped in Europe.

The play is well written, staged, directed and beautifully acted with some amazing local talent.

The set is wonderful and as it is a theatre in the 75% round it is almost like you are hiding in the annex space with them. The actors never leave the stage, just as they could never leave their hiding place (even at intermission).

The audience is spell bound and quiet, caught up in the life of an exuberant teenager and the frightening circumstances of the plight of the Jews.

The 17 year old actress who plays Anne is truly amazing, as you never doubt for a minute that this is the real Anne Frank.

I love this play… this is the third time I have directed it. I love it because it is such an enduring story of hope and light that grew out of the darkest days of world history. This is a play that needs to be produced for the obvious reason…we must never forget.

So many of us read the diary in school….another reason I love this play. The audience comes to the theatre with knowledge of the events surrounding Anne and her family. They already know her and love her. They already know the fate of the family. This makes the job for theatre artists very interesting.

This adaptation has a number of wonderful aspects, not the least of which is that it truly focuses a wonderful spotlight on the hope and light and the domestic humor of people living in a close quarters. There is no way to diminish the nightmare they lived. Between the very real horror that bookends scenes in the play, we show you the very life, human good, coming of age, blossoming love, hopeful youth, familial struggles and successes…and there are wonderful moments that will make you laugh.

However, I hope you brought your tissue. It is no secret that in the theatre, the best way to impact the heart and soul is to loosen them up with beauty, goodness and laughter, before you introduce them to tragedy.

WHERE: Warehouse Theatre 37 Augusta St. Greenville, SC 29601

WHAT: Please prepare a one minute monologue from the Shakespeare play of your choice. Please bring a picture and a resume of theatrical experience. Please be prepared to list conflicts for the rehearsal process.

Be prepared to list conflicts from April 15^ththrough June 13^th. Rehearsal dates are not yet set.

I’m curious what people will think when they see that Anne’s diary entry from January 5th 1944 is part of this adaptation. One of the reasons that I like this adaptation over the original script is that this one includes some of the entries and themes that the first script avoided becasue of such closeness to the actual events. This script is also a more complete theatrical experience…Kesselman has made the structure of the play, how the story is told and how the dramatic action unfolds, much more in line with our contemporary sensibilities. And she added the entry from 1/5/44.
